Asylum Sessions

Faith Communities Supporting Asylum Seekers in the Interior

During this session, participants will learn about case management programs serving asylum seekers in the interior that provide wraparound support and address physical, psychosocial, medical needs and more.
Participants will also broaden their awareness of the stories of asylum seekers through multimedia.

Following this session, participants will:
Understand services available to asylum seekers in the U.S.
Understand gaps in programming due to federal policies.

Presenters

Susan Krehbiel, Associate for Refugees & Asylum, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance

Ms. Susan Krehbiel is the Associate for Refugees and Asylum for PCUSA (Presbyterian Disaster Assistance), working with regional bodies, congregations and national partners in refugee-related ministries. Susan has 30 years’ experience starting with a local asylum project in Detroit. At Lutheran Immigration & Refugee Service (2003-2011), Susan oversaw both asylum & resettlement programs, including alternatives to detention and refugee foster care. She worked as a consultant with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in DC and South America.

Susan is a ruling elder at Catonsville Presbyterian Church and works part time for the Presbytery of Baltimore. She has an MA in Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin and a BA in Spanish from the College of Wooster.

Mabel Hernandez, Associate Director, Church World Service South Florida

Mabel Hernandez, Associate Director at Church World Service South Florida Offices, is responsible for assisting the South Florida Offices Director in the day-to-day oversight of the CWS-Miami, Broward and Palm Beach Office operations and ensuring that programs are carried out effectively. Additionally, she is responsible for the Human Resource aspects of the CWS South Florida office locations, ensuring compliance with CWS personnel policies, and providing oversight to the Welcome Programs at those locations. She holds a B.A. in Social Psychology, a Minor in Sociology, a Certificate in Women’s Studies from Florida Atlantic University-Boca Raton, FL and a Certificate in Human Resource Management from Florida International University. Mabel worked with victims of domestic violence and their children for 10 years prior to joining CWS in 2007.
