Welcoming Refugees: Preparing to Welcome

If it has been a long time since your church was involved in refugee resettlement or the first time ever, this session is designed for you. Refugees have to wait years for the opportunity to be resettled in the United States. This can be a difficult time for them, full of anxiety. Even after they have been approved for resettlement, the wait continues. Much attention has been given overseas to how to help refugees make productive use of this “waiting period” to keep them engaged and hopeful. This has led to an increase in English language instruction, cultural orientation to life in the U.S., job training and more. U.S. church leaders often report a similar struggle as “Welcome Teams” try to get the attention of their church members and the community when the reality of resettlement feels far away and uncertain. So how do we capture the imagination of our congregation and our neighbors? What can we do now that will benefit the resettlement of refugees in the future?

Hosted on 11/30/20 by Susan Krehbiel, Associate for Refugees at the Presbyterian Church USA & Amanda Craft, Manager of Advocacy, Office of Immigration Issues at the Presbyterian Church USA.
