CWS emergency situation report: Hurricane Sandy: Cuba

Situation report:

Hurricane Sandy is barreling through the Caribbean, causing damage in the Bahamas and Cuba, as well as Haiti. The Category 2 hurricane has killed four people and is expected to affect the eastern United States next week.

In Cuba, the storm affected the eastern part of the country, particularly affecting the provinces of Granma, Holguin and Las Tunas. Also affected was the province of Santiago de Cuba.

Response:

The Cuban Council of Churches, a long-time CWS partner, is conducting damage assessments in affected areas.  A shipment of material goods from CWS to Cuba is departing on Oct. 27, and had been scheduled prior to the disaster. The shipment, valued at $176,490, includes 3,300 CWS Blankets; 9,000 CWS Hygiene Kits; 1,125 CWS Baby Care Kits; and 1,500 CWS School Kits.
