CWS Denounces Speaker Boehner’s Unwillingness to Govern

November 15, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC -— Church World Service denounces Speaker John Boehner’s recent refusal to work with the US Senate to fix our nation’s broken immigration system. CWS joins the immigrant rights, faith and community groups across the country that are outraged by the Speaker’s rejection of his responsibility to govern.

The Rev. John McCullough, CWS President and CEO released the following statement:

“A fringe minority’s apparent control of our democracy undermines the principles under which our nation was founded. The Speaker cannot and will not silence the widest possible coalition of faith, labor, business, law enforcement, immigrant rights and community groups.

“The movement for immigration reform is alive and well. I am emboldened by courageous members of Congress like Representatives Jeff Denham, Illeana Ros-Lehtinen and David Valadao. I am inspired by the incredible leaders presently fasting from all food just steps away from the US Capitol as part of the Fast for Families. These individuals give me great hope and continue to drive our movement. As Church World Service, we will always continue the struggle for genuine immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship for 11 million aspiring Americans.

“Speaker Boehner, you may want to try to ignore our nation’s broken immigration system but doing so does not make the tragedy go away. The ongoing crisis in our families, congregations and communities continues unabated as more than 1,100 people are deported each day. The time is now for redemptive action, and Speaker Boehner, you still have time to be on the right side of history. We invite you to join us.”
