“Today, we face a global refugee crisis of unprecedented scale—and the eyes of the world are upon the United States to lead. CWS commends President Obama on advancing in the right direction and hosting a summit next week with world leaders to address this critical issue. However, the administration’s announcement that the U.S. will resettle 110,000 refugees in the upcoming fiscal year falls sorely short of meeting current demands.
“With more people displaced in the world than we’ve seen in generations, the time is now for bolder US leadership.
“Anything short of a steadfast U.S. commitment of admitting 200,000 refugees over the next fiscal year would betray the White House’s own call to redouble global resettlement efforts—not to mention shortchange thousands of people in need of a place to call home. Coupled with an expanded commitment to admit more refugees, CWS further urges the U.S. Congress to ensure a commensurate increase in integration support and social services for refugees starting their lives anew in our country. Increased funding for the Office of Refugee Resettlement is critical to refugees and the communities that welcome them.”
“The global refugee crisis is one of the most pressing challenges of our time—an urgent reality that the United States’ response must reflect accordingly. Nothing less will do.”
