Embracing A New Life: A Journey to Ellis Island

September 13, 2022

On a beautiful summer day in August, Church World Service office in Jersey City embarked on a journey to one of the most iconic landmarks in the United States – Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. The group of 48 clients, hailing from diverse countries such as Afghanistan, Syria, Ukraine and Honduras, boarded the ferry with excitement and anticipation.

As they made their way to the island, the clients marveled at the stunning views of lower Manhattan, the bustling city just a stone’s throw away. The museum exhibits at Ellis Island took them back in time, to a place where immigrants just like them once passed through on their journey to a new life in America.

Many of the clients were deeply moved by the stories they encountered at the museum. They saw themselves in the journeys of the individuals represented, who had overcome obstacles and persevered against all odds. One client, who had recently arrived in the United States, shared that the trip made him feel like he had finally arrived at his new home.

The day was not only a cultural and historical experience, but it was also a practical one. Each client was given a CWS School Kit, filled with essential school supplies like pens, pencils, and books. One client, overflowing with gratitude, shared that “In Honduras, none of our schools have pens and pencils, and so I am so happy to be ready for school this year.”

As the day came to an end, the clients boarded the ferry back to Jersey City, their hearts filled with the spirit of freedom and resilience that the Statue of Liberty symbolizes. The trip was a phenomenal day for all, bringing together individuals from different backgrounds to share in a common experience. The visit to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty will forever be a cherished memory for each of these clients, a reminder of their strength and perseverance on their own journeys.
