Situation Report: North Waziristan (Pakistan) Displacement – 2

February 25, 2014

Situation:

As reported on Jan. 31, in the last few months, government-identified political militants and Pakistani government forces have been engaged in skirmishes in North Waziristan, with thousands of families fleeing due to escalating tensions. Adding to the tension: peace talks with the Taliban were suspended on Feb. 17; government airstrikes were ordered against militants, and dozens have been killed.

Tens of thousands have fled North Waziristan since last month as fears of a military operation in the area grew after helicopter gunships pounded suspected hideouts of militants in the Mirali and Miramshah subdivisions.

CWS Response:

Currently CWS is closely monitoring the situation and is in contact with local partners and concerned government departments. Should any need arise, CWS emergency teams are ready to start their response program.
