On Anniversary of Muslim Ban and Asylum Ban, CWS Applauds Senate Resolution Calling for an End to Administration’s Muslim, Refugee and Asylum Bans

Resolution Calls for Congress to Defund Remain in Mexico Policy & Restore Refugee Resettlement

Washington, DC —  Rev. John L. McCullough, CEO and President of Church World Service issued the following statement in response to the introduction of a new Senate resolution marking the anniversaries of President Trump’s first immoral refugee and Muslim ban and the implementation of the “Migrant Protection Protocols” (commonly referred to as the “Remain in Mexico” policy. The resolution further calls for a reaffirmation of the U.S. commitment to refugee protection and an end to the administration’s inhumane anti-asylum policy forcing asylum seekers to remain in dangerous conditions in Mexico during the adjudication of their claims. Today’s resolution was introduced by Senator Richard Blumenthal and is co-sponsored by Senators Patty Murray (D-WA), Edward J. Markey (D-MA), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Kamala Harris (D-CA), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Bernie Sanders (D-VT), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Chris Coons (D-DE).

“Today, Senator Blumenthal of Connecticut, alongside 16 Senators, demonstrated their commitment to America’s best ideals by introducing this powerful resolution. The resolution urges the administration to restore the U.S. resettlement program to historic norms, calls on Congress to defund the harmful Remain in Mexico policy, and pushes for the enactment of the NO BAN Act, which would ensure that no one is banned from our country based on religious or nationality-based discrimination.

“As an ecumenical organization and a refugee resettlement agency, we have seen first-hand the profoundly harmful impact the refugee, Muslim, and asylum bans have had on the families we serve. We applaud Senator Blumenthal’s championship of this important resolution and urge Congress to swiftly pass the NO BAN Act so that the administration’s Muslim, refugee, and asylum bans are terminated.

“My heart aches for our kind and soft-spoken client, Afkab Hussein, who remains separated from his wife and young son because President Trump wanted to implement a partisan and evil campaign threat of ‘a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.’ Discrimination against people because of their faith or nationality goes against the very ideals our nation was founded on, and the country we aspire to be. President Trump’s refugee and Muslim ban was wrong when it was announced, and it is wrong today as the threat of it being expanded to other countries looms.”
