Syrian refugee crisis

You can help. Here's how.

We are facing the worst refugee crisis since World War II.

Our values call us to answer the desperate pleas of mothers, fathers and children searching for safety and assistance in their darkest hour.

Over 4 million Syrians are now refugees, seeking safety in countries across the Middle East, Europe and the United States. Another 6.5+ million are displaced within Syria, forced from their homes due to violence and persecution.

Within the United States, the welcome of Syrian refugees is being challenged. This type of fear-mongering has no place in our society. People of all faiths must stand in solidarity with refugee and migrant communities.

Join us. You can do so much to help.

Join the Refugees Welcome Campaign

On April 21, we officially launched the National Refugees Welcome Campaign with dozens of partner organizations! Please visit refugeesarewelcome.org to listen to the call recording, follow along with the presentation, and see additional resources.

As we approach World Refugee Day upcoming on June 20, faith communities from multiple backgrounds, refugee resettlement organizations, refugee and human rights leaders, and organizations that work with refugees have formed a partnership to provide a vibrant welcome to refugees among us, and to encourage our country to continue to respond to the world’s crisis by offering hospitality to most vulnerable refugees in need. Sign up to host a welcoming dinner, donation drive, worship service or other event of your choosing! Be sure to register your event with us to be added to the list of events and schedule a call with a member of our team.

Opportunities to get involved

Raise your voice

House leadership is currently considering H.R. 4731, legislation that if brought to a vote, would would drastically reduce and cap refugee admissions; place refugees under continual surveillance after they have arrived; and create new procedures that would significantly and potentially indefinitely delay resettlement for many refugees. Raise your voice to make sure this anti-refugee legislation isn’t brought to a vote!

Resources for churches and pastors

CWS has always depended on the generous support of churches that have welcomed refugees to the United States, both with their words and actions. Now, more than ever, there is a need for communities of faith to join together in exhibiting a radical and unwavering hospitality to refugees in need. These resources are dedicated to helping our partners, colleagues, and supporters educate and mobilize their congregations to this end.

‘Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.’
– Hebrews 13:2 (NRSV)

Pray
Now is the time to join in prayer for an end to conflict in Syria, for refugees facing persecution, and for a strengthening in faith and welcome. Use these prayer and denominational resources in your faith community’s worship service.

Act
As people of faith, we must tell our neighbors and leaders that anti-refugee and anti-Muslim rhetoric do not reflect our shared values of peace, welcome, and compassion. CWS urges every individual to sign this petition, every faith leader to sign this letter, and every faith community to join in these actions. From posting a photo to hosting a welcome dinner, your community is a critical part of this effort.

Welcome
Join CWS in refugee resettlement – welcome arriving families as contributing members of our communities. You can assist families arriving to the US. Take a collection to help Syrian refugee families cover basic expenses. CWS will connect these funds with arriving Syrian families for housing, utilities, and basic needs as well as CWS Syrian crisis advocacy. Refugees often arrive with little more possessions than the clothing on their backs. Collect the household goods one family will need to start a new life in the US. Ship boxed items to a city across the US. Please note, household items will be provided to arriving refugees from Syria, Burma, Iraq and other countries. Contact bcasey@cwsglobal17.wpengine.com to facilitate connecting your donations to arriving families and to receive a message of thanks.
