Appeal #700-L
Appeal Goal – $125,000

Situation:

As noted in an Oct. 11 situation report, Cambodia is experiencing severe flooding as a result of greater-than-average rainfall caused by typhoons and other severe weather systems.

The Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers are overflowing and 16 of 24 provinces are affected by severe flooding, especially those by major river courses. Flooding has also affected areas in and around the capital city of Phnom Penh.

In all, more than 1.7 million people have been affected by the flooding and some 119,000 people have been displaced. Some 134 deaths are being blamed on the floods and rains; most of those affected are extremely poor families, many of whom are landless migrant laborers.

It is expected that poor farmers will also be affected in the coming weeks and months as it is expected that agricultural land will be further damaged, which may lead to crop failure. A total of 244,000 hectares (or about 600 acres) of rice crop have been inundated, half of which are in the provinces of Banteay Meanchey and Battambang.

CWS Response:

CWS is responding as a member of the ACT Forum Cambodia, and is joining together with  ACT members Life with Dignity, DanChurch Aid and Christian Aid in responding as a coordinated team.

As its part of the response, CWS is responding in Banteay Meanchey province, and is focusing on initial emergency efforts, as well as food security and water and sanitation work. This work will continue for six months, until April 30, 2014.

The CWS portion of work will focus on assistance to 1,524 people (381 families). The overall work of the ACT Forum response will also include providing water containers, mosquito nets and emergency food packages.

Budget:

$1,012,541 for the overall ACT response.  Breakdown: Early recovery food packages, water, sanitation and hygiene supplies and technical assistance – $892,221.68;  warehousing, transportation, audit and indirect costs – $129,318.82.

Please note: Since the Cambodia ACT members are doing a fully coordinated response, CWS plans to support the response of some of the other ACT members in other provinces, as well as our own work.
