Working with an assigned portfolio, this position assists in accomplishing the fund raising goals of the Funds Development program of CWS/CROP. She/he assists with the implementation of a national strategy for resource development activities in support of the overall work of the agency. Primary responsibilities carried out by the position will vary based on the constituent populations and potential donor make-up within the portfolio.
The Community and Congregational Engagement Specialist carries responsibility for supporting a variety of fund raising activities from two major four funding streams: community events and congregations. Primary activities will include the organization of community-based special events—i.e., CROP Hunger Walks—through volunteer networks; building relationships to secure donations of funds and commodities from congregations, women’s groups, and other organizations in support of CROP Programs. She/he will enhance the fund raising efforts through appropriate education of various constituencies about the issues of hunger, poverty, and its related causes and interpreting CWS/CROP’s response.
The exempt position requires an average 80% time allocated to relationship building and direct fundraising with volunteers and various other constituencies, including intensive and intentional travel within the assigned area as defined by one’s portfolio. Other activities will include event leadership capacity building and consultation and follow-up as well as donor relationship creation, maintenance and cultivation. The remaining 20% time on average is allocated to fundraising strategic planning, collaboration with Income Stream team members, office administration, constituent services, and reporting. Occasional travel to national management and training meetings is expected. The ability to work a typical work week averaging 45-50 hours, including evenings and weekends, is required.
CROP Hunger Events Fund Raising:
- Consult and interact with congregational and community leaders (clergy groups, local hunger agencies, congregations, schools, civic groups, etc.) to recruit and equip identified key volunteers to plan, organize, and promote CROP Hunger Walks, set goals, and evaluate results.
- As informed by overall Walk fund raising priorities, focus a designated percentage of time for direct Walk fund raising—with the majority of that time allocated to on-site presence—in counties and communities identified as having the greatest potential for enhanced and/or new participation and income generation.
- Plan and lead Walk leadership training sessions to equip and enhance volunteers’ community organizing, public speaking, and program interpretation skills as a way of maximizing outreach efforts.
- Collaborate with Senior Administrative Assistant and Donor Experience Team to ensure that all event-related support documents (committee lists, local allocation requests, insurance requests, material orders, etc.) are submitted on schedule. CCES staff will also need to make sure income from events are appropriately and accurately accounted.
- In conjunction with the Director of Congregational Giving, identify potential congregational donors and interpret and promote the CWS/CROP Congregational partnership opportunities and opportunities to support highlighted programs or CROP Projects.
- Build relationships with existing Congregational Partners to increase their involvement in financially supporting CWS/CROP highlighted programs.
- In conjunction with the Director of Congregational Giving, provide on-site appreciation and program interpretation for top giving congregations.
- Promote and seek congregational mission funds and alternative gifts.
Other Fund Raising:
Primarily by implementing cross-marketing strategies through on-site community presence and electronic communications:
- Participate in the development of an emergency response plan and contact list to facilitate immediate fundraising action in the event of a national/international disaster.
- Work with other CWS/CROP staff and volunteers to develop new and innovative fund raising programs and strategies.
- Interpret and promote CWS/CROP programs and related global issues in various congregational and community settings through public speaking and writing opportunities, and the use of CWS/CROP programmatic, educational, and advocacy resources.
- Assist with the development and maintenance of relationships with secular and denominational media.
- Ensure that all communication efforts are consistent with the CWS/CROP Style Guide and conform to organizational protocols.
- Maintain accurate records of constituent relationships using the database and CRM system provided.
- Assist with the annual evaluation, planning, and budgeting process. Periodically review progress toward achievement of goals with Income Stream leaders. Provide feedback and adjust work plan as needed.
- Participate in Income Stream staff calls, CWS/CROP team calls and conference calls as needed. Attend national training and staff events as scheduled. Respond promptly to communication requests from supervisors.
- Review income and expense reports monthly to ensure expenditures and other activities are in accordance with approved annual budgets and program plans.
- Prepare and submit to the Director of Development Operations accurate and timely monthly expense statements and time sheets.

Undergraduate degree in related field.
Minimum three years of proven experience in multiple fundraising methods, constituent engagement, program management, office administration, and volunteer management. Motivational public speaking and writing skills essential. Strong interpersonal and public verbal communications skills and demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively. Preference given to previous employment/volunteer experience with a non-profit and/or congregational experience.
Must possess ability to think creatively and strategically; demonstrate initiative, be self-motivated and function independently; work within a team environment; and be flexible. Computer and electronic communications competency in word processing, spreadsheet, database, electronic, Internet, Intranet, and social networking applications required. Must have a valid automobile operator’s license.
