CHURCH WORLD SERVICE APPLAUDS BIPARTISAN CONGRESSIONAL LETTER IN SUPPORT OF REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT

Letter signed by 34 senators affirms importance of the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program and urges President Trump to set a robust  goal for refugee admissions

Washington, D.C. – Church World Service (CWS) today commended Senators Shaheen (D-NH), Murkowski (R-AK), Murphy (D-CT), McCain (R-AZ), and the other Senators who signed a bipartisan letter to President Trump in support of the refugee resettlement program. The letter is unequivocal in its support for a robust refugee admissions goal for Fiscal Year 2018, and underscores the vital significance of the U.S. Refugee Admission Program as a pillar of our national security and foreign policy.

“The U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) is a critical pillar of our national security and our foreign policy,” reads the letter. “The 50,000 number recommended in the President’s budget request is insufficient when compared to the millions of people who have been forced to flee their countries…. The current global humanitarian crisis requires strong American leadership.  To reflect that, we request that your Presidential Determination for the upcoming fiscal year set a robust refugee admissions goal.”

This bipartisan effort reflects the welcome for refugees that we see every day across the country. CWS urges the Administration to follow suit and ensure access to protection for the world’s most vulnerable refugees by setting a refugee admissions goal of at least 75,000.

Since 1946, Church World Service has supported refugees, immigrants and other displaced individuals, in addition to providing sustainable relief and development solutions to communities that wrestle with hunger and poverty.
