Immigration Law Internship
The Immigration Law Internship, although unpaid, will provide interns with highly employable skills in immigration legal services. The intern will assist the Staff Attorney by conducting legal research, attending meetings and drafting immigration legal documents. S/he will observe client interviews and work directly with clients to complete forms to be submitted to Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Executive Office for Immigration Review and/or the State Department. The intern will participate in community outreach to promote awareness of immigration legal issues. S/he will develop creative education and advocacy tools relating to immigration laws in the United States in both English and Spanish. The intern will review cases and note eligibility for immigration benefits. S/he will also help organize and participate in immigration clinics. Applicants should be familiar with legal issues that impact immigrants and refugees.
Interns must be a law student in an accredited New York law school either receiving course credit for the internship or participating under the supervision of a professor. Interest in working with the immigrant community is highly desirable. All interns must be willing to quickly and accurately obtain information and be professional. Excellent communication and customer service skills are a must as this position involves client interaction. Spanish fluency highly preferred. The intern must possess high quality writing and editing skills, proficiency with online communications tools, and must be able to bring creativity, initiative, and the ability to multi-task to the position. Passion and commitment to the work of CWS is essential.
Interns must work a minimum of two days per week. Hours are flexible. The internship dates are flexible according to academic calendars. Qualified applicants who can commit to intern for more than one semester (two semesters maximum) will be given preference.
