Statement on Normalized U.S.-Cuba Relations

July 20, 2015

Today, the United States and Cuba officially re-established diplomatic relations and reopened their respective embassies in each other’s capitals. CWS is a staunch advocate for normalized relations between the U.S. and Cuba and we celebrate President Obama and President Castro for the work that led to today. Years of dedicated, strategic and consistent ecumenical advocacy by CWS and our member communions and denominations have contributed to this milestone.

Yet, more work lies ahead. Lifting the U.S. trade embargo would vastly improve the day-to-day lives of many Cubans. Let that be the next goal. This is a humanitarian issue that CWS will continue to focus on as lifting the embargo will greatly improve the lives of our sisters and brothers in Cuba.

We are excited about what the future holds for the U.S. and Cuba. Today, we applaud a concrete step towards peace.

– The Rev. John L. McCullough, President and CEO of CWS
