Situation Report: Afghanistan Earthquake and Landslides

April 15, 2014

Situation

A 4.1 magnitude earthquake and heavy rains triggered landslides in Afghanistan’s Takhar Province on Saturday, April 12. At least four people have been killed and 100 houses destroyed. The death toll is expected to increase as rescue efforts to remove people trapped under debris are underway.

Damaged roads which were flooded are making rescue efforts by Afghan police forces and rescue teams more difficult. Residents of the province are being moved to higher ground for safety.

The mountainous province is approximately 150 miles northeast of Kabul, and landslides occasionally occur during the spring rainy season.
