Eaton, Ohio – In the struggling aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, with a fresh Northeaster headed for the same affected coastal areas later this week, humanitarian agency Church World Service and supporters around the nation are continuing to assist survivors with collections, shipments and distribution of emergency kits, blankets and clean-up buckets, and the requests continue to come in.
In towns nationwide, volunteer buckets and kits donation events are popping up nationwide to quickly collect, assemble and ship boxes of the CWS emergency assistance supplies – like the following Thursday evening in Eaton, Ohio.
WHAT/WHEN/WHERE:
Volunteers from churches across Southern Ohio will travel to Eaton, Ohio, this Thursday evening, to assemble CWS Emergency Clean-up Buckets for immediate shipping. The regional effort is a project of Brethren Disaster Ministries of Southern Ohio and their district-wide collections of CWS emergency kits.

“When we assemble the CWS Clean-up Buckets on Thursday, there will be lots of people from many different Southern Ohio churches here to help, some traveling quite a distance,” said Eaton project organizer Pat Via. In spring of this year, Via said the Eaton church’s Sunday school class collected and shipped 400 clean-up buckets to CWS.
Earlier this week, members of the Eaton Church of the Brethren Fellowship Class and Women’s Aid Fellowship collected and prepared donated supplies for final assembling and packing on Thursday.
With thousands of Sandy’s survivors still either in temporary shelter, transitional housing, or in damaged homes still without power and services, CWS Ohio Regional Director Matthew Stevens says “Items like CWS Clean-up Buckets containing such supplies as sponges and detergent, or personal-sized CWS Hygiene Kits, Baby and School Kits, are all still vitally needed.”
Stevens said CWS has already shipped well over $480,000 of the relief supplies for immediate distribution across affected communities in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Church World Service sponsors CROP Hunger Walks across Ohio and nationally.
CWS issues urgent call for contributions, ongoing relief supply donations
Due to demand, relief and development agency CWS has issued an urgent call for more of the donated CWS emergency materials. “We’re also calling for cash donations, in part to replenish supplies and demand for CWS blankets, as survivors now are dealing with cold, freezing temperatures, and more bad weather on the way.”
The agency is also planning its initial long-term recovery response for community groups working with the needs of uninsured and most vulnerable survivors.
