CWS Webinar Focuses on Long-term Recovery Basics

November 30, 2012

NEW YORK — As part of humanitarian agency Church World Service’s Hurricane Sandy response, CWS Emergency Response Specialists will present a webinar focused on long-term recovery basics, Dec. 4-5.

The webinar, which begins at 2 p.m. EST each day, will cover best practices and important steps to remember as communities start to form long-term recovery groups. A special focus of the two-day webinar will be on issues that have arisen in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

“For all who will be involved in the long term recovery of their communities this is terrific opportunity to be introduced to how the process works and how the many pieces fit together,” said Barry Shade, who directs CWS’s domestic emergency response program. “This webinar will be a great first step to help the survivors of Sandy to rebuild their homes and lives.”

Long-term recovery groups focus much of their efforts on those populations who are most vulnerable, such as poor people, women and children, immigrants, the unemployed, the elderly, those with physical and mental disabilities and the underinsured.

The groups strive to provide aid where insurance and government programs cannot.

“Long-term recovery is the process by which a community comes together to find and use the resources of survivors, the community, government programs and the assistance of other partners to address the needs of the affected individuals and families, especially  the most vulnerable, so that they may sustain their physical, social, economic and spiritual well being,” said the Rev. Bryan Crousore, a CWS emergency response specialist.

There will be two sessions on each day, lasting approximately 60-75 minutes, with a 15 minute break. This webinar is free, and open to the general public.
