Appeal Update: Myanmar Flood Response

August 20, 2015

Appeal code: #700-V
Increased Appeal amount:  $383,168

Note: This is an update to our August 5 appeal.

Situation

More than 1.3 million people have been affected by monsoonal floods, landslides and Cyclone Komen since mid-July in Myanmar (Burma). Twelve of the fourteen states and regions across Myanmar are affected, displacing more than 297,000 households. This is a country-wide crisis.

More than 1.4 million acres of farmland have been inundated, water levels remain high and the rainfall is projected to continue. The loss of stored grains and livestock is expected to disrupt the planting season and impact long-term food security.

Priority humanitarian needs are food, shelter, access to health care, safe water and adequate sanitation services, shelter and school repair, disaster risk reduction training, livelihood recovery assistance and the protection and psychosocial services for the most vulnerable, including women and children.

Response by CWS

CWS is responding to this emergency as part of the wider effort of fellow ACT Alliance members in Myanmar. CWS will provide basic relief aid, support target communities to be prepared for floods, mitigate risk and damage by waterborne disease brought on by the floods and support communities to rebuild their livelihoods after the flood waters recede.

Sixty communities with about 70,000 people in Maubin, Pathein and Ngapudaw townships in the Ayeyarwady Region will be provided information on emergency preparedness, helped to plan for contingencies and provided food and hygiene materials at evacuation centers.

Working together with local partner YMCA, CWS will provide:

  • food security assistance to 8,800 people
  • non-food items to 6,400 people
  • water, sanitation and hygiene support to 4,400 people
  • early recovery and livelihood restoration to 46,200 people
  • emergency preparedness training.

Already, a CWS staff led workshop on emergency preparedness now has partner staff deployed to 60 communities, sharing essential information how how to respond to the flood waters. (See Responding to floods in Myanmar on the CWS blog for a first-hand account on this effort.)
